Summary of the Position

The Director, Asia Region is responsible for leading on building partnerships, advocating for increased resources in core areas of the organization’s work with existing and new donor, identifying high priority prospects (strategic partners and donors) and developing and executing institutional engagement plans to increase USP’s influence, collaboration and revenue with priority donors and partners. The Director will drive growth through market intelligence, advocacy and relationship-building. This role is externally facing with a primary focus on donors, partners and influencers based in Asia and Europe. The Director will represent USP throughout Asia and Europe; develop standards of excellence in donor/strategic partner and prospect engagement with the goal of increasing revenue and maintaining USP’s relevance within the international development community in line with USP’s 2020-2025 Strategic Plan.  The Director, Asia will work collaboratively across the division with business development and project implementation teams to maintain positive relationships with donors and influencers, leveraging existing portfolios to influence donor practice, policies and investment levels as they relate to high priority sectors of interest. As USP grows, s/he is likely to manage project directors throughout Asia, including Central Asia as well as managing some programs directly.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute an Asia strategy for donor engagement and growth, aligned with our 2025 goals.

  • Execute macro-level engagement strategies to increase influence with and revenue from priority donors and partners, in collaboration with the new business development team, country and technical leads, especially with non-US based donor relationships (GFATM, Dfid, EU, AfDB, Merck for Mothers, etc.)

  • Contribute to business development strategies, including helping to establish new partnerships to realize our 2025 partnering and revenue goals.

  • Lead the identification, and guide the analysis of emergent donor and prospect priorities with support from the global business development team.

  • Continuously stay abreast of pertinent developments both from a funding perspective as well as within key core technical areas and policies to define and implement appropriate strategies.

  • Represents USP at high-level donor, partner and industry meetings .

  • Lead on expanding pool of potential partners by prioritizing complementary yet like-minded organizations, including local and regional players.

  • Cultivates and strengthens institutional relationships, position for and pursue promising opportunities, negotiate favorable terms and partnerships, resolve operational issues, and advance common ground.

  • Build and sustains networks with individuals and organizations who influence donor program strategies and funding priorities including but not limited to WHO and other UN organizations, ASEAN, and key associations in global health and the pharmaceutical sector.

  • Proactively work with and support country teams to increase their understanding of donor and partner strategies, intent, opportunities and how to best advocate for resources and respond to opportunities in coordination with the business development team.

  • Manage small/medium scale programs directly as well as Project Directors, CoP and other staff as USP’s portfolio grows.

Basic qualifications

  • BA + 15 years or Masters’ degree + 10 years in public health, international affairs, international development or a closely related field

  • At east 5 years in new business development, and/or international development practice globally, including 3 years across Asia.

  • Experience working in 3 or more countries relevant to the work of the Global Public Health team at USP

  • Proven experience driving growth and increased visibility for an international NGO

  • Ability to make significant contributions to development and execution of business plans, including marketing strategies and tactics.

  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate, influence and manage risk.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated leadership experience and ability to generate interest with high-level external stakeholders, including with donor agencies and government.

  • Proven ability to influence funding decisions as evidenced by past track record

  • Excellent oral, written and presentation skills with ability to present to senior level executives and government representatives

  • Ability to travel up to 30-50%.
