Founded in 1990, OutRight Action International strives to support lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) people to live safer, healthier, and more empowered lives worldwide. Outright Action International’s vision of change includes policy reform, legal challenges, coalition initiatives, and stronger LGBTI communities worldwide. OutRight Action International currently seeks a Director of Law & Policy.


The Director of Law & Policy helps to conceptualize, design and implement advocacy and human rights documentation strategies to advance LGBTIQ rights. A senior staff position reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Law & Policy is likely based in New York City but travels extensively.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Leadership, strategy and program delivery

  • Act as an expert and lead for all of OutRight’s legal or policy advocacy and research.

  • Work closely with the Director of Global Advocacy to identify and assess legal and policy advocacy opportunities in other priority regions of the organization.

  • Liaise with Communications, Development and Operations departments to ensure programmatic vision is embedded across the organization.

  • Track progress on programmatic goals and recalibrate OutRight initiatives as needed (utilizing monitoring and evaluation on an on-going basis).

  • Serve as an organizational spokesperson and ambassador.

  • Policy and advocacy

  • Support existing, new and potential advocacy initiatives.

  • Help conceptualize and edit the department´s written products, including all research reports and briefing papers.

  • Write, in collaboration with OutRight colleagues, reports and proposals to funders.

  • Maintain relationships with diverse existing and potential allies, including: LGBTI and mainstream civil society, governments, United Nations officials, international and regional human rights institutions, donors, academic institutions, legal institutions, experts and beyond.

 

Management

  • Participate in the senior management team.

  • Supervise multiple OutRight regional and thematic programs (for example the research program, UN program, and Caribbean program) to seize advocacy opportunities for LGBTIQ rights globally.

  • Manage and support 5-7 staff members, as well as consultants and volunteers.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Essential

  • A graduate degree in human rights, international relations, law, or related field.

  • Minimum 10 years of experience working to influence LGBTI human rights or a related area, particularly with a focus on law and policy.

  • Minimum of 3 years of management experience required.

  • Demonstrated experience working regionally and/or internationally.

  • Knowledge and track record producing credible human rights documentation and reports.

  • Senior-level advocacy experience and knowledge of policy-making.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (both writing and editing) in English.

  • Capacity to plan and prioritize multiple, sometimes competing demands in a fast-paced environment.

  • Willingness to work in New York City and, if necessary, to apply for and qualify for a US Visa.

  • Commitment to the pursuit of liberation from persecution based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity or expression within the broader context of a desire to eliminate all intersecting forms of oppression.

 

Desired

  • Experience managing people remotely.

  • Proficiency in another language than English is strongly desired.

  • Commitment to the on-going study of political change.

  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively.
